WHY I LOVE POTATOES?

June 30, 2017

In the Philippines, we’ve always been rice lovers and we see to it that we have it in almost every meal. Be it in a form of congee, fried rice, or even dessert. Now that we are more exposed in living a healthier lifestyle we tend to seek more options to meet our carb requirements to fuel our body and to keep us going.

One of my top of mind for rice replacement are US Potatoes. There are tons of reasons why we should love US potatoes especially for people who live an active lifestyle like me. US Potatoes are rich in vitamin C and potassium. Did you also know that it contains electrolytes that’s essential to athletes as well? Electrolytes are necessary for optimum body function, and having too few can cause cramps, as many athletes know.

Another reason why I love US Potatoes is because it’s also rich in fiber. A medium US potato with skin contributes 2g of fiber, which provides 8% of the daily requirement. Dietary have numerous health benefits, including improving blood lipid levels, regulating blood glucose, makes you feel full longer, and it aids in weight loss.

US Potatoes also are very versatile in terms of the dishes you can make with it. It takes creativity and a bit of research to get that perfect US Potato recipe. Some of you might opt for boiled, baked, and fried. But in the Philippines, we use it to supplement our favorite dishes with added nutrients. Overall, I really recommend having US Potatoes as carb replacement. Aside from it being very filling, it’s also packed with the needed vitamins our bodies need.

What’s you favorite US potato recipe? For recipes and more information on US Potatoes you may check out their Facebook page.

WHAT TYPE OF WORKOUT/EXERCISE DO YOU DO?

I do Pilates, Suspension training, I run (training for my first 10k) and I lift weights. It’s fun combining all these because it targets different parts/muscle group and it doesn’t make me feel bored!

 WHAT’S YOUR FITNESS MANTRA?

My fitness mantra is to take it slow. While it’s okay to push yourself, you also have to be wary of how you train. So it’s okay to take it slow and have a slow progress. After all, slow progress is better than no progress, which leads me to say, better a 30-minute run, walk or even light may workout than nothing at all.

It’s easy to compare yourself to others especially if you like their body (peg) or particular part of their body. But truth is, one of the secrets to having a better version of you is to never compare yourself to others. It’s also okay to take a day off. Take the chance to do so and let your body recover so you can work on making it stronger!

ADVICE FOR WOMEN WHO WANTS TO BE FIT

My advice is to just start. The moment you decide that you want to be fit is the moment you commit to being fit.  Choose a workout that you know you can stick to so it’s not something you dred doing. It also helps to wear workout clothes or shoes that makes you feel confident, listen to music that can get you motivated to lift weights or finish a workout set. Whatever it is that makes you more committed to sticking to your fitness journey, go do it! If you want to post progress photos of yourself on your social media channels so you can track your progress or at the bey least motivate you to continue working out, go ahead and do it! don’t mind what other people say after all, you’re doing this for yourself and not for them.

 Lian Melegrito (@liangaudence)

Lian is a fitness coach and a former member of the UP Pep Squad. She also teaches strength classes in collaboration with Nike Training Club.

WHAT TYPE OF WORKOUT/EXERCISE DO YOU DO?

I do a combination of resistance / weight training and Cardio / high intensity interval training. With proper mobility training on recovery days.

WHAT’S YOUR FITNESS MANTRA?

My fitness mantra is “Today! Not tomorrow”. I know it seems easy for me, given that I am in the fitness industry, but tbh, I get lazy! All the time! But I have this mantra to remind me to just get it over with. Pushing it aside, or saying “tomorrow”, will either prevent you from starting or hasten your momentum. When you get lazy, you Just Do It!

ADVICE FOR WOMEN WHO WANTS TO BE FIT

Start with what makes you happy! If it’s a zumba class, or a cycling class, or heavy lifting, do it! Any workout is better than no workout at all! But remember to explore, just like everything in our life, our body needs balance. Make sure to get a balance of your cardio workouts and mix it up with some strength workouts. That way you have variety, and you keep progressing and challenging yourself.   Working out should never feel like a chore, make it enjoyable, make it a habit, and the results will just follow.

Nikki Torres (@nkitorres)

We have another Fit Stop crew over here. Nikki Torres is the creator of the cardio + toning class called NT Sweat. Check her blog and see how she slays her workout like a queen.

WHAT TYPE OF WORKOUT/EXERCISE DO YOU DO?

All sorts! I like doing a whole bunch of different things but my mainstays are yoga, circuit training and of course NT Sweat.

WHAT’S YOUR FITNESS MANTRA?

Just show up regardless of how you feel.

ADVICE FOR WOMEN WHO WANTS TO BE FIT?

Fitness is a lifestyle not something you jump into just to look good. It takes a lot of patience and hard work as there are no shortcuts. Get ready to fall off the wagon and jump back in hundreds, even thousands of times.

Every choice you make, no matter how small, either brings you closer to or farther from your goal–a net gain or net loss.

Your body should be your ally in fitness not your enemy. Don’t punish it by starving or overtraining if you want it to work with you and respond positively. 💜

Hilary Isaac (@hilaryisaac)

Tough Girl Extraordinaire Hillary Isaac is part of our list too. Hillary shows everyone how to stay ripped 365 days a year. Hillary is a certified fitspiration for both men and women. Did I mention that she’s also crowned as Ms.Gold’s Gym Philippines 2016?

A post shared by Hilary Isaac (@hilaryisaac) on

WHAT TYPE OF WORKOUT/EXERCISE DO YOU DO?

I do strength training which is basically weightlifting. I do heavy days and light days depending on my goals. I try to balance it out between building muscle strength (the ability to lift VERY heavy) and muscle endurance (the ability to execute an exercise or action for a prolonged time or high repetitions). It’s nice to look strong, but it’s more important to BE strong.

WHAT’S YOUR FITNESS MANTRA?

My fitness mantra is really more my life mantra. It’s one of my most favourite quotes in the world and it’s from Jean De La Fontaine. “Patience and Time do more than Strength or Passion” because bodybuilding and fitness take time and patience. You need to trust the process, enjoy the journey so you can learn all you need to. Time is what builds the more important parts of you. Strength and Passion can come and go seasonally and conditionally. But when you’ve devoted enough time and patience to your journey, you’ll see you’ve built a strength and pursued a passion that is more lasting.

ADVICE FOR WOMEN WHO WANTS TO BE FIT?

Go for it! Fitness comes in all shapes and sizes, so don’t feel like you need to be a certain weight to begin. Consult a professional personal trainer to get you started the right way. Tune out your naysayers and listen to your support system. They will prove very useful throughout your fitness journey. Remember your WHYs (why you’re doing this, why you started, and why you WILL succeed) and use it to motivate you and later on inspire others. Stay real and faithful to your journey because you’ll never know who’s watching you and who might be drawing confidence and inspiration just by watching you.

Angela Nepomuceno (@lush_angel)

Who says make-up and fitness do go well together? Angela of Lush Angel is here to prove you guys wrong. With her washboard abs and perfect skin, Angela is definitely an inspiration for girls all around the world.

WHAT TYPE OF WORKOUT/EXERCISE DO YOU DO?

I primarily do weight lifting with occasional cardio and HIIT.

WHAT’S YOUR FITNESS MANTRA?

There are no shortcuts, only hardwork.

ADVICE FOR WOMEN WHO WANTS TO BE FIT?

Set long term goals, which includes making and living a healthier lifestyle. Don’t be discouraged if you do not see results in a couple of weeks or months. It takes patience and determination to achieve your fitness goal.

I hope this list helped you to stay motivated and to keep going with your fitness game. These girls have so much fitness wisdom and even I learned a lot of things from what they said. Enjoy your fitness journey!

Had the privilege to watch the 65th Miss Universe’s preliminaries and dress rehearsals at the Mall of Asia Arena with my family and friends. It was something for the books that we got to take part (as part of the audience) in this momentous event. Allow me to share some photos that I took during the 2-day event.
